Nolvadex Tamoxifen as a Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator

Estrogen is a hormone present in the females that is responsible for normal menstrual cycle and for the development of secondary sexual characteristics. These secondary sexual characteristics include development of breasts, the reproductive system and a number of other changes that take place in a female body during puberty.

An excess of this hormone can cause a number of complications in the females that include development of breast cancers and deep vein thrombosis i.e. development of clots in veins, especially deep veins of legs. Excessive estrogen is also responsible for excessive weight gain, menstrual disturbances, ovarian cysts, migraine headaches, endometriosis, and fibroids.

Nolvadex Tamoxifen is an estrogen blocker in some tissues and an estrogen enhancer in others. It blocks the harmful effects of estrogen and at the same time retains its beneficial effects. It is basically a competitive partial agonist inhibitor of estrogen receptors in our body and the first drug of its kind. Nolvadex Tamoxifen competes with estrogen for binding sites and can suppress or enhance the effects depending on the tissue. Due to this reason it is classified into a special group known as selective estrogen receptor modulator or SERMs in short.

Nolvadex Tamoxifen  is a non steroidal drug and is usually given by oral route in the form of tablets. It has a half life of about 7-14 hrs in the blood and is mainly excreted by the liver. Its dose is 10 – 20 mg per day.

Nolvadex Tamoxifen  is successfully used for the treatment of breast cancers. It is used as adjuvant therapy with surgery and radiation and is now extensively being used for palliative treatment of breast cancers in post menopausal women. Nolvadex Tamoxifen is also indicated for prevention of breast cancer in high risk patients. It is also used to treat gynecomastia in males i.e. the development of breasts in males. It inhibits the estrogen receptors in breasts of males and thereby prevents gynecomastia. Other uses include treatment of infertility and the bipolar disorders.

Nolvadex Tamoxifen contains tamoxifen and is available in 10mg and 20mg tablet form. To buy nolvadex one must have a doctor’s prescription but it can also be bought from online websites. Some athletes and body builders specially buy nolvadex from these online websites and stores to be used as an anabolic drug to help build muscle.

Adverse effects of Nolvadex Tamoxifen include hot flushes, nausea, vomiting and mild bone pains; it also increases the incidence of thromboembolic events and cause vasodilatation and hypertension in a few patients. One of these major thromboembolic events is the development of clots in deep veins of the legs. These clots are very dangerous as they can easily get dislodged and get stuck in some major artery of brain or may block the pulmonary arteries. Some other minor adverse effects include mood swings, depression, insomnia, skin rash, vaginal discharge, amenorrhea, loss of libido and irregular menses. These adverse effects are much less compared to pure estrogen receptor blockers like anastrazole. In spite of these adverse effects, the benefits of taking Nolvadex Tamoxifen clearly outweigh its negativities.
